Category: Moan of the Day

I came across a programme on Really tv called ‘virtual life and cyberspace love’ by chance last night.  It was the story of Carolyn and Lee, a not so happily married couple plus four kids from the US.  In her fantasy world Carolyn plays a sexy looking character in ‘Second Life’ a virtual reality programme and struts her stuff in skimpy g-strings and thigh length boots and uses her avatar to create an on screen  existence to escape her  real life.

In real life housewife  and mother Carolyn is a slightly over weight red head in need of  a dose of some real help. It’s not hard to figure out that  she has no time to make the best of herself as she spends up to 14 hours a day on her pc in her especially adapted bedroom.  Carolyn had  almost abandoned  her four real life children and her enduring hubbie Lee, who compensated for her withdrawal from family life by taking on the house and kids  in addition to working ,whilst Carolyn frolics in her fantasy existence.

Carolyn and her on screen lover meet in real life when Carolyn unable to function in normal life  finally flies to the UK to meet Elliot. The documentary follows the story of the cyber couple but it’s definitely  not love at second sight and Elliot makes it clear he has no desire for Carolyn in the real world. Conversation is stifled and awkward and it’s plain to see the sparks did not ignite and the on screen love affair was not going to become a reality.

Curious, I googled ‘ Second Life’ and it came back at me with umpteen hits. It seems ‘Second Life’  has been around for  a good few years although I had never heard of it ! It’s a complete cyber empire where avatars live, love, work and socialize. Avatars buy property, get married, go shopping,  play sports, visit art galleries, and everything else imaginable. Not only that but a handful of countries such as Sweden, Serbia, and the Maldives to name just a few are represented by embassies!  Avatars can even get religion. Virtual land and has been bought by a number religious institutions and there are numerous churches and mosques so avatars can get their godly fix.

All fascinating and mind blowing stuff and yet it’s also a sad reflection of real life where vulnerable people like Carolyn can lose themselves …..literally. I figure she may have been bored with her real life and became an addict of her cyber life as an easy option and there are many who unwittingly fall victim into it, but what she really needed was a  more assertive husband who did more than ‘allow’ her the space to let their real world be taken over.  The whole family have suffered through Carolyns addiction and I’m sure there’s a new market in cyber addiction just around the corner.

On the case of Polanski

The case of Roman Polanski arrested and charged 33 yrs ago for sexual abuse of a 13 yr old still remains unresolved…. how come?  What he did is and always will be rape and child abuse and nothing less no matter how it’s been redressed and repackaged by his defence team and excused by his fans.  No matter what spin  is placed on it, Polanski  is a self-confessed paedophile.  To call it by any other name is an offence in its self.  ‘Statutary rape’  implies something else, it’s a term which somehow diminishes the offence . Since when did sodomising and raping a child become less than it actually is. It’s scandalous that Polanski has thus far played International legal process and has been able to live a  successful life which would not have been possible for him had he not had the advantages of his career.  Imagine for one moment that he was not a world famous producer and just a  teacher, or a bus driver!  There is no defence for his behaviour and that he has a sad history is of no significance and has no bearing on how he should be dealt with. At 44 yrs old ( his age at the time ) he fully understood that getting a child drunk and giving her sedatives before raping her was illegal as well as  immoral.

I don’t want to hear about the ridiculously named  ‘witch hunt’ of Polanski, something the mastermind created himself by running away from his crime … its irrelevant. Calling the  persual of Polanski a ‘witch hunt’  implies that he has been unjustly harassed or persecuted. Since when was the persecution of a paedophile unjustified ? And equally I don’t want the current views of the victim herself, who for some reason wants the charges against Polanski dropped, to be taken into account . She is still every much his victim now as she was then.

This man has dodged the system for 33 yrs and it’s time he was brought to justice. He has cleverly  outwitted and manipulated international legal systems and these should also be brought into account. If I get a parking ticket and fail to pay the penalty, it accrues. Why should Polanski be dealt with differently?  If Polanski  and Geimmer want closure then the only way is for Polanski to do the right thing before he kicks the bucket. He owes Geimmer that much at least.

The thought that Polanski is sitting in his chalet in Switzerland believing he is above and beyond the law makes me feel sick.

The NHS SUCKS.

YES THE NHS SUCKS …. I used to work for them so I know just how it’s run from the inside. It doesn’t take an Archbishop to tell us just how bad it really is. Having said that, I’m pleased that at last someone from a more ‘elevated ‘ position OTHER than the mere ‘users’ of the service is speaking out about it, although Im not in any way confident that it will make a scrap of difference. The system is a law unto itself now and in my opinion lost all it’s ‘caring’ and humanity some years ago. Is it too late to get some ‘caring’ back I wonder?

The Govt tells us it’s expensive to run, over used  and  under funded and that is their blanket excuse for all the problems that the NHS has become.  How can it be over used? Was it a service only intended for a few rather than everyone? Not according to the NHS who state that ‘The NHS was born out of a long-held ideal that good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of wealth. That principle remains at its core’ .

And as for under funded ‘HUH’ is all I can say! The NHS has a huge budget.! Over a hundred billion £’s  which according to the NHS website,  of which 60%  goes in staff pay. Ahah so maybe that’s the problem.  And yet the NHS staff are not exactly well paid, have little job security and poor working conditions.. and almost no support within the structure and that I know for a fact.  As an ex member of the NHS staff I can say that most of my peer colleagues worked unrecognised and un payed hours in excess of their contracts.

You might wonder why I’m an ‘ex’ member of staff  and if I have an axe to grind …. well yes I have and it’s a long story. I’d like to tell you a happy  tale  and that I found my true vocation in life or I won the lottery and didn’t need a job but suffice it to say that the NHS didn’t do much for me when I was ill. In fact I was ‘dumped’ when I was ‘ill’ of course they use a much more ‘pc’ term for it I think the word was ‘ incapable’ ,  ahhh yes ……I was too ILL and  therefore unable to do my demanding job that significantly contributed to my illness. Thats the NHS I became only too familiar with. When I’m better I might take that on….. that’s another story though.Am I bitter? I have to say the injustice of it still smarts but I see it as a new oppertunity, for what Im not sure yet.  Still working on that.

From an ex inside perspective the problem with the NHS is it concentrates too much on meeting targets and fails to get on with its job. ‘Target’ setting puts too much pressure on staff … it goes top down and eventually lands in the laps of the ground level staff who are the most valuable asset the NHS has.  The NHS  has a unique ability to create jobs which are intended to promote efficiency but in reality cause more problems than they are worth.

I suspect  things will only go from bad to worse and it’s the NHS service users who will suffer. closely followed by the ground level staff.   There is no solution to the problems with the NHS and no matter what the Govt does or says it will do, the NHS is  a sham of a service run by a network of  buddies,  ‘if your face fits’ run service that will carry on regardless.
